Catalog Description

Bio 259 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4). An introduction to human structure and function. Skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems are emphasized. Laboratory involves study of human development and gross anatomy of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. (3,2) May not be taken as a biology major elective.

Learning Objectives

Students completing Human Anatomy and Physiology I should demonstrate a proficient understanding of the human body and how it maintains homeostasis at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organ system levels. At the cellular level, students will investigate cell biochemistry, cell structure, cell function, and specialized cell types; at the tissue level, students will survey the general structure, function, and locations of all basic tissue types; at the organ and organ system level, students will be introduced to the integument, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system as well as the interactions of these systems. In addition, students will review the basic processes and interactions that occur during the course of early human development as the basic body plan is established.

Grading

Final letter grades will be determined as follows:

  • A=90% --> 100%
  • B=80% --> 89.99%
  • C=70% --> 79.99%
  • D=60% --> 69.99%
  • F=0% --> 59.99%
(+) and (-) will be used according to University Policy

Exams:

  • 4 Lecture Exams (100 pts each)
  • ARIS On-line Assignments (52 pts)
  • 2 Laboratory Practicals (100 pts each)
  • 1 Laboratory Practical (50 pts)
  • 8 Laboratory Assignment (6 pts each)
Total Points Possible...750 points

Exam Policies

  • All exams will be administered only once (at the regularly scheduled time). Under no circumstances will students be allowed to take an exam at an alternate time or date.
  • If a Lecture Exam is missed for legitimate reasons (excuse must be documented in person and in writing within 1 week of the missed exam), students will be required to take a makeup exam. All makeup exams will be given at the end of the semester on the same day at the same time (refer to lecture schedule).
  • Students arriving late for any exam will be subject to the makeup policy.
  • All students are REQUIRED to take the Final Exam.
  • Laboratory exam and grading policies will be explained by your laboratory instructor.

Please Note the Following:

  • Attendance is both required and expected.
  • Cut Policy: students are responsible for all missed work; remember, "80% of success is just showing up" (Woody Allen)
  • Accommodation: students with disabilities that require special accommodations should contact their instructors during the first week of classes.
  • All cell phones MUST be turned OFF and put away at ALL TIMES during Lecture and Laboratory.
  • Absolutely NO eating or drinking is allowed in the lecture room or laboratory.
  • Please use your WCU email account for all email correspondence.
  • I DO NOT use Blackboard; all information required for the course is posted and available on the Bio 259 website. To access the site, follow the url listed at the end of this page.
  • University computers located in the Library and in Sykes cannot be used to complete Aris assignments.
